Most have never heard of the Alligator, it was lost of the East Coast. Hasn't been found.

Possible irony? Before WWII, the battleship was king and the carrier was the question mark. Today, the carrier is king and the nuclear submarine is the question mark. The sinking of a former USN light cruiser in the Falklands and sea-to-shore missile strikes are the most combat these vessels have seen. Not much to judge by but still. Also, USN nuclear submarines are named after US States like battleships (USS Kearsarge BB-5 being the sole exception) once were.
